HISTORY NOT WORTH REPEATING...

ON THIS DAY

In 1903 the United States acquired a naval station at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Cuban officials said negotiating the contract was torture. Hmmmmm.

On this date in 1938, the very first nylon toothbrushes went on sale. Needless to say, they were much more popular than the wire ones.

In 1997, anthropologists in Switzerland proclaimed that Lucy, a 3.2 million-year-old skeleton found in Ethiopia in 1974 and dubbed "the mother of humanity", was in fact male.

In 2003, cops said a gang leader with no arms or legs was the getaway driver for an apartment house robbery in Chile. The 20-year-old, who had stumps for arms and legs, and two accomplices were arrested in Santiago when someone called police during the robbery. The man drove the getaway car by tying his knees to the steering wheel and controlling the pedals with sticks tied to his neck and elbows.

ONE YEAR AGO

In Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Nalynle Carol Torres, 52, admitted to police that she stole a deposit bag from her employer -- and used the money at a bingo hall.

COOLER CONVERSATIONS

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- About 350 people who got sick a week into a Caribbean cruise were responding well to medicine, the cruise line said Tuesday. Celebrity Cruise spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez said 326 of the more than 1,800 passengers on the Celebrity Mercury began complaining Sunday of upset stomachs, vomiting and diarrhea. Martinez says 27 of the nearly 850 crew members also reported symptoms.

The ship left Charleston on Feb. 15. State officials said there has been an outbreak in norovirus cases across South Carolina but that it is not possible to say if that's what led to the ship's illnesses.

Martinez says the crew is conducting "enhanced cleaning" of the ship to prevent the spread of the illness.

An extra doctor and two nurses came aboard in St. Kitts, in the Leeward Islands, and will sail to Charleston, arriving early Friday.

It's not clear what caused the outbreak. Norovirus is often to blame for similar symptoms sweeping closed quarters like those on cruise ships, but a determination will have to until samples are tested.

Samples from ill passengers and crew are being sent to the Centers for Disease Control, said CDC spokesman Jay Dempsey. He said workers from the agency's Vessel Sanitation Program will meet the ship when it arrives in Charleston.

The workers will conduct an environmental assessment of the ship to determine the cause of the illness, he added.

MISDEMEANOR SQUAD

In Elma, New York, police arrested an 18-year-old boy who caused thousands of dollars in damage to hardwood floors at a residence by break dancing while wearing a large diamond belt buckle. Police believe the teen was intoxicated when he arrived at the house party held by the victim's daughters. As the boy repeatedly tried to break dance he gouged the floor and caused about $3,000 worth of damage. The parents were on vacation at the time. The teen now faces a felony criminal mischief charge and a misdemeanor trespassing charge.

SHOW-BIZ REPORT

Charlie Sheen is back in rehab. A rep for the "Two and A Half Men" star says Sheen has entered a rehabilitation facility, quote, "as a preventative measure." Stan Rosenfield also said that the 44-year-old actor would take some time off from his CBS sitcom while undergoing treatment, and asked that Sheen's privacy be honored. Rosenfield would not provide any details on what type of rehabilitation Sheen was undergoing, and said no further statements were planned.
Sheen, who has been through rehab twice before, was charged earlier this month with assaulting and threatening his wife, Brooke Mueller, during a heated Christmas Day argument in Aspen, Colorado. The actor is free on bail and is expected back in court in Colorado on March 15th. Mueller also recently spent time in a rehab facility in Malibu, California until an alleged breach of privacy led to her early departure from the program. Mueller is reportedly seeking a new facility for rehabilitation for substance abuse.

Bristol Palin, the daughter of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, is set to make an appearance on a TV series about teen pregnancy. The 19-year-old single mom will make her acting debut on ABC Family's "The Secret Life of the American Teenager." Palin is expected to play herself in the popular drama series. Her episode will be shot in Los Angeles for air this summer when the series returns for its third season.

Actor Kiefer Sutherland is returning to work on the FOX series "24." E! Online reports that the man behind Jack Bauer recently got the greenlight to resume work. This, following a two-week production shut-down while Sutherland had minor elective surgery. Chris Alexander, a spokesman for FOX, said, quote, "Kiefer's been cleared to return to work, and we resume production March 1." The 43-year-old TV star had received outpatient treatment for a cyst that ruptured near his kidney.
